Ge Microwave Door Switch Replacement

Ge Microwave Door Switch Replacement

If your GE microwave is not working properly, it may be due to a faulty door switch. The door switch is a safety feature that prevents the microwave from operating when the door is open. If the door switch is not working properly, the microwave may not turn on or turn on and off erratically.

Replacing a GE microwave door switch is a relatively easy task that can be done at home with a few basic tools.

Here is a step-by-step guide:

Tools and materials needed:

  • Screwdriver
  • Wrench
  • Replacement door switch (available at most appliance parts stores)

How to Replace a GE Microwave Door Switch

  1. Unplug the microwave from the power outlet.
  2. Open the microwave door.
  3. Locate and remove the door switch assembly.
  4. Carefully disconnect the electrical connector from the door switch assembly.
  5. Remove the door switch assembly from the microwave.
  6. Connect the electrical connector to the new door switch assembly.
  7. Secure the new door switch assembly in the microwave with the screws.
  8. Close the microwave door and plug it back into the power outlet.
  9. Test the new door switch assembly by opening and closing the microwave door. If the microwave turns on and off when you open and close the door, the door switch assembly has been replaced successfully.

Here are some additional tips for replacing a GE microwave door switch:

Contact a qualified appliance repair technician if you are uncomfortable replacing the door switch assembly.

Safety warning:

Microwaves use high-voltage electricity, so it is important to take precautions when replacing the door switch assembly. Always unplug the microwave from the power outlet before attempting any repairs.

FAQ

How do I know if my GE microwave door switch needs to be replaced?

There are a few signs that your GE microwave door switch may need to be replaced:

  • The microwave does not turn on when you close the door.
  • The microwave turns on and off erratically.
  • The microwave sparks when you close the door.
  • The microwave light comes on, but the magnetron does not work.
  • The microwave door switch feels loose or wobbly.

If you are experiencing any of these problems, it is best to test the door switch to see if it is faulty. To do this, you will need a multimeter:

  1. Unplug the microwave from the power outlet.
  2. Open the microwave door.
  3. Locate the door switch assembly. It is usually located on the right side of the microwave door frame.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the door switch assembly.
  5. Set the multimeter to read continuity.
  6. Touch one probe of the multimeter to one terminal of the door switch and the other probe to the other terminal.
  7. If the multimeter reads continuity, the door switch is working properly. If the multimeter does not read continuity, the door switch is faulty and needs to be replaced.

What are the different types of GE microwave door switches?

There are two main types of GE microwave door switches:

  • Primary door switch: This switch is located on the microwave door frame and is activated when the door is closed. The primary door switch prevents the microwave from operating when the door is open.
  • Secondary door switch: This switch is on the microwave door latch and is activated when the door is fully closed. The secondary door switch ensures the microwave door is properly closed before the microwave begins operating.

Some GE microwave models also have a third door switch, called a monitor door switch. The monitor door switch is on the microwave door frame and activated when the door is slightly open. The monitor door switch is responsible for turning off the microwave if the door is opened during cooking.

GE microwave door switches are typically normally closed (NC) switches. This means that the switch is closed when the door is closed and open when the door is open. When the door is closed, the switch completes an electrical circuit, allowing the microwave to operate. The switch breaks the electrical circuit when the door opens, preventing the microwave from operating.

GE microwave door switches are available in various sizes and configurations. When choosing a replacement door switch, selecting the correct switch for your specific microwave model is important. The replacement door switch part number is in your microwave’s owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s website.

My GE Profile model #PVM9006DJ2BB died. I had to remove it in order to work on it, you can’t even change the fuse in place. Found the fuse had blown so replaced it. Still not working. Tested the door switches and found that the monitor switch (the middle one of three switches) was faulty. I decided to replace all three switches since I had to remove the microwave to get at them. Replacements from a well-known parts supplier would have cost over $210 (the fuse alone would have been $56!). I got the parts from Amazon for $45. Unit now working fine. I found that all three door switches are exactly the same size, and all are Normally Closed-N/C, despite the fact that GE gives each one a separate part number. Part numbers I used are WB24X10204, WB24X10205, Wb24X10146 and WB14X10053. The fuse is 120V/20 Amp.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Jay! That’s quite a price difference for the parts. Did you notice any quality difference between the Amazon parts and what you could have gotten from the regular supplier?
